There’s a kinder answer to abortion.

It’s time for a new, fact-based narrative about abortion. Many new ideas are coming out — these are mine.

This comes from my belief that solutions to hard problems are possible if people want them.

Life and death are bookends. In the battle over abortion, we are spending our time fighting over the end point of a much longer, more complex process — life, conception, and pregnancy. I don’t think anyone is against reducing abortions, but let’s take a step back and see if knowing some actual facts might help us think about better resolutions.

Data on this comes mostly from CDC, Kaiser, the Pew Research Institute, and the Guttmacher Institute. References are given below.

Who has abortions? About 10% of abortions are for mothers under 20 and about 60% are for women in their 20’s. 90% of abortions are in the first trimester.

Why do young women have abortions? The decision to have an abortion is typically motivated by multiple, diverse and interrelated reasons. The themes of responsibility to others and resource limitations, such as financial constraints and lack of partner support, recurred throughout the study.
See Table 2 in (3).

Thus, the data shows that most women don’t have abortions because they think it is easy or convenient, but base their decision on many concerns, including financial and relationship stress and family issues (3). This should immediatly suggest some kinder remedies to pro-life…
