Not So Fast: Four Key Reasons To Postpone RBG’s Replacement

I suggest 4 reasons to postpone RBG’S replacement. A common thread connects vetting, the importance of diversity of thought, and the need for our country to have time to discuss a lifetime appointment to our highest court.

1. People are already voting in a chaotic time. This discussion is a disruptive, red herring and can be postponed.

2. RBG was an icon to many. Rushing her replacement is disrespectful to all of us, especially her family. We need time to grieve and reflect on her legacy. These are High Holy Days for Jews. Having a drive-by confirmation for her replacement would be like replacing Thurgood Marshall with George Wallace or Antoine Scalia with someone off the street. The first step to healing our country is to be respectful.

3. We are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion and the US cannot establish a state religion. However, the supreme court currently lacks religious diversity and, with another Catholic, no matter whom, it would get less diverse. I would argue the same point for any protected category. We do need more diversity overall, but religious background is the only characteristic that has been shown to significantly affect judicial decisions in cases concerning moral values (See article)
